Setting Ground Rules

  1. Do not wake your puppy. Also, do not scare or startle him to wake him.
  2. Crates are off-limits for kids. Always allow your puppy to exit the crate on his own.
  3. Tell your kids a secret, “If you want to be the puppy’s favorite, do not pick him up!”
  4. No teasing. Do not take a toy or yank it from a puppy’s mouth. Instead, trade for a higher-value toy.
  5. Always ask for permission to interact with the puppy. Provide 100% supervision while your children are playing with your puppy.
  1. Do not give orders to the puppy (for now). Make this a game or a challenge to see what you can get the puppy to do without talking.
  2. Puppies are fun but require respect and appropriate play.
  3. Avoid hugs. Puppies generally dislike hugs and will say so by growling or biting.
